Field Placements

Date

September 2024 - April 2025

Date

January 2024 - April 2024

As part of my time in the Community Worker Program at George Brown College, I have been extremely fortunate to spend time learning and working in the field with 2 incredible organizations, Square Circle Toronto and St. Felix Centre.

Square Circle Toronto:
Square Circle is an after school program that uses the principles of Social Circus to empower youth in Toronto's inner city. While co-facilitating this program, I have been able to help teach circus skills such as juggling and acrobatics to kids while providing them a safe space to grow and be themselves. Outside of after school activities, I have been able to learn and practice several skills to support Square Circle such as grant writing, face-to-face community outreach, testimonial collection, team building, collaboration with other community organizations, and various administrative support skills. My time at Square Circle has been incredible, and has shown me how many different "hats" one has to wear in this type of work.

St Felix Centre- Respite Services Program:
In the Respite Services Program at St Felix Centre, unhoused adults are given a safe place to sleep, as well as access to meals, showers, and laundry services. Shelter guests are also provided a safe injection site and kits to reduce harm caused by drug use. Meals and kits are also provided to unhoused community members who do not have a place in the shelter. During my 2024 placement at St. Felix Centre, I was able to participate in providing all of the aforementioned services, and I built meaningful bonds with several shelter guests and staff. My experience at St Felix Centre was incredibly positive, and taught me firsthand about all of the care and energy that goes into supporting community members who are currently facing hardships. By the end of my placement time, I was told by my supervisor that I was "more of a colleague than a student".
